In 2027, virtual assistants like Sarah seamlessly handle our daily tasks, making life seem effortless. But behind this technological marvel lies a hidden reality. This documentary reveals the untold story of the ghost workers who power our digital world, performing the tedious and often traumatic tasks that machines cannot handle. Meet the invisible workforce behind tech giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon and Uber. These low-paid and one-time workers label images, moderate content and train AI systems, often earning less than minimum wage. Their work is essential, but remains in the shadows, unrecognized by the companies that depend on them. 00:00 – Introduction: The illusion of effortless AI 02:15 – The hidden workforce: Who are the ghost workers? 05:30 – Undercover: Life as a content moderator 09:45 – Training for artificial intelligence: The tedious tasks behind intelligent machines 13:20 – The psychological toll: PTSD and stress among moderators 17:00 – The future of work: What’s next.. .
Very sad. All those AI companies should be forced to pay at least a minimum wage. 🥹😞😞😞
How human interactions are negative as well as all the negative stuff filling the brains of every one. Our brains are like a cassette tape or VHS tape ( USB drive) on record 24 hours seven days a week. ( There is a point that it records deeply right before sleeping and right after waking up.) So. Everything watched heard. Seen is downloaded. We should flood our brains with knowledge, YouTube classes, Alison, courses. Etc. And as humanity we will become better
Getting 0.10$ per box drawn and paying the worker 0.02$ per 10 is just disgusting.
Figure eight founder such a greedy coward, shame
Such a creepy laugh.
you never explained how you found such ghost workers. The only way to do that would be via figure8 themselves giving you their ip location – I doubt they would ever do that.
This is definitely unethical especially because data labeling is a very soul draining work. For clarity's sake, the people shown are not actually training AI, but just labeling data so it can be used to train AI models (particularly neural network based models). This is a major flaw in the AI models – LLMs – available today, as it is a none-scalable methodology / way to train models because it requires huge amount of data for training. If there is no reliably labeled data then they are unable to train these kind of models…
Not going to lie. I couldn't get through the entire video. When I saw the level 3 lady with 3 kids living in subsidized housing doing all this for 5$ an hour 8 hours a day. I had to leave the room. This has to be some kind of crime against humanity to have people doing this kind of thing. Doing this soul killing work, training the very AI that will replace them and most others.
is it really "underpaid"? I agree that it's literally grunt work, but is there some other price you think these tasks are worth? I mean, how valuable is this task? how much money are you generating by drawing boxes around people in photos? I get that it's not a livable wage, but if you required companies to pay people $15 an hour to do work that's only worth $0.30 an hour, then companies just wouldn't do it at all. you can't expect businessmen to do this at a loss off $14.70/hr/person, they would be bankrupt in a matter of weeks. this is just how much the labor is worth. a minimum wage doesn't mean people who do this work get paid more, it means this work doesn't get done at all because there's no way for companies to do it without losing money. companies exist for the purpose of making money. they're not charities. if there's no way to do something profitably, they don't do it. that's what we rely on actual charities for. instead of demanding companies pay more for labor that's nearly worthless, we should take the profits from the things we do create profitably, and direct them to charities. and that IS what we do; that's how this woman is able to live in nice public housing with her children, in a house worth FAR in excess of what she will make in her entire life. that is as it should be; we should take care of those who can't take care of themselves. we shouldn't engage in this delusion that every person's labor is worth at least $15 an hour, that everyone's time is equally valuable, that we can all produce in 1 hour the same amount of value. furthermore, I think the notion of "ghost workers" is a little silly. this isn't a case of human beings doing a job that is presented as automatically generated. that's fake AI, where humans produce the output and it's presented as AI-generated. this isn't that. this is people training a machine learning model. nobody is pretending that machine learning models don't require any human input. of course they do. it's not some dirty secret that these models require training. the point is to take all these human inputs to create a trained model which can then answer questions and solve problems on its own, without further human input. and that IS how AI works currently. it requires training, but once it's trained, it is able to solve problems on its own (with a certain failure rate, to be sure). that is very different from a fake AI, where you ask it a question and you think it's answering, but in reality there's just a human on the other end directly answering your question. that does exist, people really are paying indians at call centers to answer questions, but that's not what figure eight is engaged in, as far as I can tell. so, this whole video is a bit clickbaity.
"muesli with soymilk" lmao yeah I can see AI in 2027 secretly poisoning us with phytoestrogens. bro you're french, there's a 97% probability you can digest lactose.
I worked as a content moderator of Tiktok for a company in Poland. Basic local salary…totally sh1tjob
First they conditioned people to lose morality and ethics, now they are harvesting by making people make e-chains for themselves. And it is so much sarcastic on them, since the company is called Figure 8, where 8 represents eternity. Figuring out your own eternity!
So, basically a bunch of woke, emotionally hypersensitive people are training AI as a virtual judge?
The market of ideas will crumble and fall in a near future.
Sorry guys! If you think something is too graphical, flag it and warn the user, and northing more.
You folks are doing a great service to the world by showing the dark reality behind AI to the world!! Subscribed!
35:50 Really? They have employeers for that and still none of my reports get's deleted??? What a joke
The people responsible for this are the dirt monkeys uploading sickening stuff online
38:10 estoy 100% seguro que hay un chileno hablando de fondo 😂

For those of you not being able to leave the house for work and desperate for every dollar or euro: Do online surveys on the internet! You ll earn more there – without the damage to your soul! unfortunately YT won t let me put firms here, but just google "online surveys"…..they mostly give as reward for your time amazon gift cards, some even pay out cash money. You don t even need a bank account for these, merely an email address and a mobile phone for verification.
hahaha… "can we take this in a different direction" says the PR clown…they thought the video was to promite their company.🤣🤣
This is so absurd. Thanks for making this documentary!
You shouldn‘t be a Journalist if you can‘t handle shocking content.
I assume Police Forces see stuff like that every day. They don‘t cry about it on tv…
You wanted open borders and globalism? Now you have it. Congrats!
This work should be done by prisoners, for free.
My friend lives in Eastern Europe. He won't say what company he works for but he's a "content reviewer". At this point he's so desensitized to everything because his cheap labour means he sees the worst of the internet for 8 hours a day.
This cat has 7k BTC in 2027.. dang , send some back to the past 😃. I only need 1
Well… the truth is. She is disposable.
This is worker exploitation. It is not slavery. The people who actually are slaves would tell you that there is a difference. Slaves have no freedom of choice. They cannot choose to not work. Do not diminish the true horror of slavery by applying it to grossly underpaid tech workers.
I remember about 20 years ago coming across companies that were paying remote workers just to write; and the sums that were being offered were ridiculously low; but this is completely outrageous. These people are making hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars on slave wages and the desperation of people that need to make money legally any way they can. What a disgrace!
AI is rubbish.
stupid facebook
Corporations will always be corporations and view bottom line, it is the job of our lawmakers and politicians to make sure that this doesn't happen as they can change this in a heartbeat..
I don’t think Figure8 knew this tv crew would go this far! They probably thought it would help promote the company and build their image. Otherwise they wouldn’t have signed up!
Left propaganda. As you said it's pure demand and supply and they don't have problem with finding new workers. It's mean that people agreed to work on this wage.
Welcome ti the matrix
Funny how his mates in the office are employees but the people doing all the job are contractors or associates.
disgusting people with AI skills are getting too powerful and the result is a tougher life for too many if this is not regulated
ok so theyre operating a mental illness factory so we can like photos of cute cats in insta
Same story as Yanis Varufakis was telling about "cloudalists".
Pain a chocolate is NOT pancakes
Whats crazy is these are the people who virtue signal. The ones who tell us we are racist and homophobic. But they dont lose sleep over the lives they actually use like they're nothing more than a piece of trash
